Only a few things to report on for this update. What with Christmas, New Year and especially the weather!
It's been just too darn cold and uninviting to venture out into the Garage much at all.
December. I got an exchange Distributor from my local Motor Factors and fitted it straight away.
I really wanted to get the Vacuum Advance back into play just as Uncle Henry intended.
Working fine, but to be honest it's really difficult to tell just running up and down the drive.
January. The next job was to sort out the wipers.
SVC supplied a 100 Degree Drive Gear (was 110 Degrees) and I also got a new Drive Rack.
The Wheel Boxes were OK. Again, they seem fine now and the sweep stays within the glass area, rather than thumping over the surround as they did before.
I've had a long think about the Propshaft and have decided to leave it be.
Nearly 20,000 miles on the clock now and I figure that if it was going to fail, it would've done so by now.
I've also had a good look at the Drive Shaft Gaiters and they don't seem too bad, so again I'm going to leave these be for now.
February. Next up was to sort out the Brakes. Discs warped for the third time! Something certainly not right here.
After pondering various options (all rather expensive) and dicussing the matter with other Hoodies (Thanks Guys!) it suddenly clicked ...
My hubs are powder coated and it occured to me that the chances of the powder coating being uniformally even are probably pretty slim.
This in turn was the probable cause for the disc runout, eventually leading to what is termed DTV (disc thickness variation).
I therefore decided to remove the powder coating from the hub face where it mates to the disc.
This was done but I had to use a blow lamp to soften up the powder coating. Once the majority was removed,
I used paint stripper to remove the rest and then some emery and wire wool to clean them completley.
I will get the runout checked before I continue.
More spend. ebcbrakesdirect supplied me with a pair of new semi-drilled Discs and some GreenStuff Pads. I also ordered a set of Rear Shoes. I've now discovered that the dust seals are shot on the Calipers, so it looks like I'm going to have to swap these out too. At least I'll know that everything should be good from now on - Fingers crossed!
Here's what left to do during March:
• Brakes -- Conclude Refurb.
• Wheels -- Refurb.
• New Tyres -- Bought & Ready to fit.
• Lower Wishbone Ball Joints -- Bought & Ready to fit.
• Seats (Lower?).
• Sidescreens (Extra Velcro?).
Getting through it slowly and aiming to be on the road for April!
